Ichijo Kanesada
Year of death: July 1, 1585 (July 27, 1585)
Year of birth: Tenbun 12 (1543)
A military commander in the Sengoku and Azuchi-Momoyama periods. His father was Ichijo Fusamoto and his mother was the daughter of Otomo Yoshiaki. He was born into the Tosa Ichijo clan and adopted by Ichijo Fusumichi in Kyoto. In 1551, he was ennobled and celebrated his coming of age. The following year, he was promoted to the rank of Junior Third Rank. His base was Nakamura Castle in Hata County, Tosa Province (Kochi Prefecture), and he controlled the same county, Takaoka County, and Uwa County in Iyo Province (Ehime Prefecture). However, his castles were taken by Chosokabe Motochika, and in 1573, he became a provisional Chunagon (councilor of state) and soon after became a monk. His son Naizasa took over as head of the family, but Motochika held the actual control of the area. In 1576, Kanesada traveled to Bungo Province (Oita Prefecture) relying on his second wife's father, Otomo Sorin, and was influenced by Christianity by Cabral, the head of the Jesuit mission in Japan. The following year, he was baptized by Cabral's disciple Bautista. His spiritual name was Don Paulo. Afterwards, he returned to Tosa and fought against Motochika's forces at Watarigawa (Shimanto River) with his former retainers, but was defeated and retired to Toshima in Uwajima, Iyo Province. He was seriously injured by a close attendant, Irie, who had been bribed by Motochika, and died of illness in the 13th year of the same year. His grave is in Toshima.
