A school of Art Nouveau that developed in Europe and the US from the late 19th century to the early 20th century. Active mainly in the town of Nancy in eastern France, it was characterized by naturalistic expressions using motifs of flowers, birds, insects, and especially plant motifs, which were strongly influenced by Japanese art. It was also the central activity group of the Art Nouveau movement, also known as Botanicalism. The beginning of the Nancy School dates back to É. Gallé, a craftsman from Nancy, who attracted attention by winning many awards for his glassware and ceramics exhibited at the Paris World's Fair in 1878. However, it really took off with the large-scale exhibits of Gallé and his school at the Paris World's Fair in 1889, where they won numerous major awards, including the Grand Prix.
