Schwarzwald (English spelling)

Schwarzwald (English spelling)
A mid-alpine mountain range in southwestern Germany, stretching about 160 km from north to south, east of the Rhine. It is connected to Switzerland in the south and the Odenwald Mountains in the north. It faces the Vosges Mountains (France) on the west bank across the Rhine Graben. The southern part is steeper, with the highest point being the Feldberg (1,493 m). The Danube and Neckar rivers drain into the area. The name "Black Forest" comes from the fact that the forests were lush and the area looked black overall, and even today about 60% of the area is still forested. There are also many lakes and hot springs, and the settlements in the mountains and at the foot of the mountains are known as tourist destinations and health resorts in both summer and winter. Livestock farming is practiced, and handicrafts are developed in mountain cities, producing musical instruments, music boxes, cuckoo clocks, and other products.
