Santur - Santur (English spelling) Persian

A stringed instrument of the zither family used in classical art music in Western Asia and Northwest India. It has a trapezoidal sound box (long side about 1 meter, short side about 40 cm, depth about 30 cm, thickness 5-7 cm) with 18-24 courses of metal strings, four per course, stretched parallel to both long and short sides, with one movable bridge on each course. The top plate of the sound box usually has two openwork sound holes. The player sits on the long side and plays the instrument using a tremolo technique, holding a light, thick-tipped paddle made of hardwood or plastic in each hand. A tuning pin is attached horizontally to the side of the sound box, and the strings are tuned to match the mode of the piece each time it is played. Most instruments have a range of three octaves or more.
