A fossil of the monocotyledonous plant Sabal , a genus in the palm family. About 20 extant species are known to be evergreen shrubs or trees, distributed along the coasts of the West Indies and the warm tropical regions of Central and South America. The leaves grow terminally, forming a crown, fan-shaped, and deeply palmately lobed into numerous leaflets. The leaflets have parallel veins running vertically, long petioles, and their tips extend thinly into the leaf blade. Fossil species have been found from the Cretaceous onwards, and in the Paleogene they grew in temperate regions much further north than their current distribution. In Japan, they are abundant in Paleogene coal-bearing seams, especially the Eocene, from Hokkaido to Kyushu. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
