Philip K. Dick

American science fiction writer. He began writing science fiction in 1952, and established himself as a writer with "Eyes of the Universe" in 1957. He is a writer who creates a unique fantasy world by dealing with standard science fiction themes, but transforming them into inner-cosmic fantasies of individual consciousness. He is known for his fondness for introducing guru-like figures and emphasizing allegorical qualities. His Hugo Award-winning "The Man in the High Castle" (1962) is set in a world where the United States loses World War II and the Pacific coastal states are occupied by Japan. It involves the I Ching of Eastern philosophy, and creates another reality that is juxtaposed with the objective reality. His other works include "Mars Time Slip" (1964), "Do Androids Dream of Electric Sheep?" (1968), and "Barris" (1981).

アメリカのSF作家。1952年からSFを書き始め、57年『宇宙の目』で作家としての地位を確立した。SFの定石的テーマを扱いながら、それを個人の意識の内宇宙的ファンタジーへと転化させて、一種独特の幻想世界を創造する作家。好んで教祖的人物を登場させて、寓意(ぐうい)性を強調するところに特色がある。ヒューゴー賞受賞の『高い城の男』（1962）は、第二次世界大戦にアメリカが負けて太平洋岸諸州が日本に占領されるという設定のストーリーで、東洋哲学の易経が絡み、客観的現実と並置されるもう一つの現実が生まれてくる。ほかに『火星のタイム・スリップ』（1964）、『アンドロイドは電気羊の夢を見るか？』（1968）、『バリス』（1981）など。
