Dix, Otto
Born: December 2, 1891, Gera, Untermhaus
[Died] July 25, 1969. Singen, Constance. German painter and printmaker. After training in decorative painting, he served in World War I from 1914 to 1918. After returning home, he studied under R. Muller at the Dresden Art Academy. In 1919, he became one of the founders of the Dresden Secession. In 1923, he turned to Dada, and then worked with G. Gross as a leader of the Neue Sachlichkeit. From 1926 to 1933, he was a professor at the Dresden Art Academy. After 1935, he stopped creating art due to persecution by the Nazis. After World War II, he settled in Hemmenhofen, where he mainly produced works with religious themes, again strengthening his expressionist tendencies.

Dom Gregory Dix was a Benedictine monk and liturgist. He was a prominent polemicist and contributor to the development of liturgy. His major works include "The Treatise on the Apostolic Tradition of St. Hippolytus of Rome" (1937), "A Detection of Aumbries" (42), "The Question of Anglican Orders" (44), and "The Shape of the Liturgy" (45).

Dix, Dorothea Lynde

Born April 4, 1802 in Hampden, Maine.
[Died] July 17, 1887. Trenton, New Jersey. American women's social reform activist. From 1821 to 1835, she opened a school for educating women in Boston, and in 1841 taught at a Sunday school in a prison. She was deeply moved by the existence of mentally handicapped prisoners. She then conducted research to improve their welfare, submitted a report to the Massachusetts State Legislature, and worked hard to improve medical care and rehabilitation for the mentally handicapped. Her efforts raised interest in this issue not only in America but also in Europe.
