Abraham Kuyper
1837‐1920
Dutch Calvinist theologian and politician. From 1863 onwards, he served as pastor in Beesd, Utrecht and Amsterdam. In 1872, he founded the daily newspaper De Standaard, the organ of the fledgling Counter-Revolutionary Party, and became its editor-in-chief, leading the party. In 1874, he was elected to the House of Representatives by the Counter-Revolutionary Party, and resigned as pastor. In 1980, he founded the Free University in Amsterdam, where he preached strict Calvinist theology as a professor (-1901). In 1994, he was again elected to the House of Representatives, and formed the Kuyper Cabinet from 1901 to 1905, but was faced with a railway strike (1903) and enacted the Law to Suppress Strikes.
