In 1872, he founded the daily newspaper De Standaard, the organ of the fledgling Counter-Revolutionary Party, and became its editor-in-chief, leading the party. In 1874, he was elected to the House of Representatives by the Counter-Revolutionary Party, and resigned as pastor. In 1980, he founded the Free University in Amsterdam, where he preached strict Calvinist theology as a professor (-1901).
