An Islamic mystical sect (tariqa) founded by Tijānī (1737-1815). Tijānī was a Berber who originally belonged to the Khalvati sect, but at the end of the 18th century he founded a new Tijāni sect, which spread to Morocco, Algeria, and other areas. In the 19th century, this sect in North Africa generally adopted a moderate and compromising attitude under French colonial rule. However, in the mid-19th century, Tijānī's disciple, the Senegalese Hadj 'Umar, spread the sect to various parts of West Africa, including Nigeria, Guinea, Mali, and Côte d'Ivoire.
