A county in the southern part of North Pyongan Province, Democratic People's Republic of Korea. Located on the vast Bokcheon Plain, which connects the alluvial plains of the lower reaches of the Cheon River with the coastal plains along the Yellow Sea, it is one of North Korea's leading grain-producing regions. During the Hong Gyeong-nae Rebellion of 1812, the peasant army barricaded themselves in the area, making it the site of the fiercest battle. It is known as one of the places where Christianity was established early after the country was opened to the world, and it was home to Osan School (founded by Ri Seung-hoon in 1907), the cradle of modern education in Korea. Jeongju-eup, the central area, is an important intermediate station on the Pyongui Line (Pyongyang - Sinuiju) and the junction of the Pyongbuk Line (Pyongyang - Supung Power Station) which leads to Kusong and Sakju.
