Invincible

Japanese: Invincible
Invincible

After World War II, no country could possess a mobile naval force capable of competing with the overwhelming US Navy's aircraft carrier force. In addition, the number of aircraft carriers possessed by countries other than the US gradually decreased due to the enormous cost of maintaining and repairing aircraft carriers. However, in the 1970s, the US and the UK came up with the idea of effectively achieving sea control by deploying a large number of cheaper smaller aircraft carriers, since even a large aircraft carrier has a natural limit to the area that it can control. In 1980, the UK completed the Invincible (approximately 20,000 tons), a full-deck cruiser equipped with the V/STOL aircraft BAe Harrier, and it has attracted attention as a new concept of light aircraft carrier. The US has not yet reached a conclusion on the cost-effectiveness of this type of sea control ship in comparison with a large aircraft carrier.
