Located in the Bouches-du-Rhône department on the Mediterranean coast of France, this town is in front of the church of the same name (Romanesque style from the 12th century). It has a population of about 2,200. There is a legend that a group of saints, including the three Marys (sisters of the Virgin Mary, mother of James, and Mary Magdalene), Lazarus, and Sarah the maid, were washed ashore here, and it has been a sacred place of pilgrimage since the Middle Ages. As Sarah was black, it is especially revered by gypsies. The church is also famous as a fortified church building. [Watanabe Masami] Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
