There are precedents for what would become known as imperial universities in countries such as Germany and France, but the first imperial university in Japan was the University of Tokyo, founded in 1877 (Meiji 10), which was given the name "to meet the needs of the nation" by the Imperial University Act of 1886. It was later renamed Tokyo Imperial University in 1897 with the founding of Kyoto Imperial University, and then Tohoku Imperial University was founded in 1907 (Meiji 40), Kyushu Imperial University in 1910, and Hokkaido Imperial University in 1918 (Taisho 7). Until the promulgation of the University Act in the same year allowed the establishment of private universities, only national imperial universities were recognized as universities. This was followed by Keijo Imperial University (Korea) in 1924, Taipei Imperial University (Taiwan) in 1928 (Showa 3), Osaka Imperial University in 1931, and Nagoya Imperial University in 1939, bringing the total number of imperial universities to nine. However, they were abolished when the new university system was established after World War II, and the seven imperial universities in Japan became national universities under the new system.
