Makeevka - Makeevka (English spelling) Макеевка/Makeevka

A city in the Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine. Population 390,000 (2001). It was called Dmitrievsk from 1920 to 1931. It is located on the steppe Donetsk Hills, in the eastern suburbs of the oblast capital Donetsk. It is one of the centers of the Donetsk coalfield, and has coal mines, steel, metallurgy, coke chemistry, food, textile, and shoe factories, as well as an architectural engineering college and a local museum. The city is said to have been founded in 1777.

ウクライナ東部、ドネツク州の都市。人口39万（2001）。1920～31年にはドミトリエフスクДмитриевскとよばれた。ステップ性のドネツ丘陵上にあり、州都ドネツクの東郊にあたる。ドネツ炭田の一中心地で、炭鉱、製鋼、冶金(やきん)、コークス化学、食品、繊維、製靴などの工場があり、建築工学専門学校、郷土館が置かれている。市の起源は1777年とされる。
