A city in the Donetsk Oblast in eastern Ukraine. Population 390,000 (2001). It was called Dmitrievsk from 1920 to 1931. It is located on the steppe Donetsk Hills, in the eastern suburbs of the oblast capital Donetsk. It is one of the centers of the Donetsk coalfield, and has coal mines, steel, metallurgy, coke chemistry, food, textile, and shoe factories, as well as an architectural engineering college and a local museum.
