Emperor Picture (English)

Japanese: 帝王図 - ていおうず（英語表記）dì wáng tú

This is the central theme of Chinese exhortation paintings. There are various examples, including those that selectively depict past emperors, those that include all the emperors of a certain dynasty, and even independent portraits of emperors from each dynasty and era. The Yan Liben "Scroll of Emperors" (Boston Museum of Fine Arts), which depicts 13 emperors from Emperor Zhao of the Western Han to Emperor Yang of Sui, is an example of the first type, the "Song Dynasty Emperor Half-Bull Portrait Album" from the "Nan Kun Hall Illustrations" (National Palace Museum, Taipei), which was housed in the Qing Dynasty Inner Palace, is an example of the second type, and the "Portrait of Emperor Taizu of the Ming Dynasty," which has a total of 11 scrolls, is an example of the third type.
