The structure of this respiratory passage is very similar to that of tetrapods, but because this system lacks cartilaginous elements, the tube that conducts the air is usually considered a “airway” (or swim bladder trachea), as in the swim bladder. The larynx originally appeared as a device to prevent food and water from entering the respiratory passage, and its specialized cartilaginous skeleton is derived from the visceral arch (gill skeleton). …
