Also known as the Royal Society. Its official name is The Royal Society of London for Improving Natural Knowledge. Founded in 1660, it is the oldest and most prestigious academic organization in the UK. In the midst of the so-called Scientific Revolution, which saw the establishment of modern science in the 17th century, intellectuals and philosophers who felt dissatisfied with traditional views of nature and academic systems were strongly attracted to the "new philosophy" or "experimental philosophy" that placed emphasis on experiments and observations.
