The Sound of Tei

Japanese: 鄭衛の音 - ていえいのおん

In China, this refers to lewd music that reflects the chaos of the world. The Music Records section of the Book of Rites states, "The sound of Zhengwei is the sound of a chaotic world...the sound of Sangjianpushang is the sound of a ruined country." As to what the sound of Zhengwei specifically refers to, there are theories that it refers to the Zheng Feng and Wei Feng from the Book of Songs, or that it refers to the songs sung at singing parties between men and women that were popular in the state of Zheng, but it is more likely that this term was used by Confucian scholars with old agrarian sentiments to express their resentment toward the urban culture that flourished in Zheng and Wei in the middle and lower reaches of the Yellow River during the Spring and Autumn Period and Warring States Period.

中国で世の乱れを反映したみだらな音楽をいう。《礼記（らいき）》楽記篇に〈鄭衛の音は乱世の音なり……桑間濮（ぼく）上の音は亡国の音なり〉とあるが，鄭衛の音が具体的に何を指すかについては，《詩経》の鄭風，衛風だとする説や，鄭国で盛んであった男女の歌垣の歌をいう等の説があるが，むしろ春秋戦国時代に黄河中下流域の鄭や衛で栄えた都市文化に対し，古い農本的な心情をもつ儒家層が反感をこめて言ったのがこの言葉だと理解されよう。
