Fujiwara no Masatsune - Fujiwara no Masatsune

A poet of the Kamakura period. The second son of Yoritsune, Junior Fourth Rank Lower Minister of Justice. His mother was the daughter of Minamoto Akimasa, Senior Second Rank Dainagon. He is the ancestor of the Asukai family, which played kemari, a game of aristocrats played by kicking a ball, which had been particularly popular since the end of the Heian period. In 1180 (Jisho 4), he was bestowed a peerage and was favored by Minamoto Yoriie, and became the son-in-law of Oe Hiromoto, the head of the Kamakura shogunate's administrative office. In 1197 (Kenkyu 8), he was ordered by Emperor Gotoba to go to Kyoto, where he served as a chamberlain, left middle commander, and commander of the right guards, before becoming a councilor in 1220 (Jokyu 2). He was favored by the Emperor and was active in the Emperor Gotoba's poetry circle, participating in events such as the "Second Hundred Poems by Emperor Gotoba in 1200," the "February 1201 Poetry Contest for Old and Young, 50 Poems," and the "1,500 Poetry Contest." He compiled the "Shin Kokin Wakashu." He was also a regular in the poetry circle of Emperor Juntoku's Imperial Palace. His family collection includes the "Asukaishu."

鎌倉時代の歌人。従四位(じゅしい)下刑部卿(ぎょうぶのきょう)頼経(よりつね)の二男。母は正二位大納言(だいなごん)源顕雅女(あきまさのむすめ)。平安末期からとくに盛行してきた鞠(まり)を蹴(け)って遊ぶ貴人の遊戯の蹴鞠(しゅうきく)の飛鳥井(あすかい)家の祖。1180年（治承4）叙爵(じょしゃく)、源頼家に好遇され、鎌倉幕府政所(まんどころ)別当大江広元の女婿。97年（建久8）後鳥羽院(ごとばいん)の命で上洛(じょうらく)し、侍従、左中将、右兵衛督(うひょうえのかみ)などを経て、1220年（承久2）参議。院の寵愛(ちょうあい)を受け、「正治(しょうじ)二年（1200）後鳥羽院第二度百首」「建仁(けんにん)元年（1201）二月老若五十首歌合(うたあわせ)」「千五百番歌合」などの後鳥羽院歌壇で活躍。『新古今和歌集』の撰者(せんじゃ)。後の順徳院(じゅんとくいん)内裏(だいり)歌壇でも常連として活躍した。家集に『明日香井(あすかい)集』がある。
