Tyrant

…the general term for the tyrants who appeared in many Greek cities between the second half of the 7th century BCE and the first half of the 5th century BCE. The English word tyrant comes from this. Most of them were from aristocratic families, but they took advantage of the chaos that had befallen the aristocracy to overthrow it and establish an illegal dictatorship.
