...Depending on the purpose of its use, hides may be cut into the side (half cut at the back line), shoulder, butt, belly, etc. (Figure). Raw hides that are not removed from animals are prone to spoilage, so they are preserved (dressing, curing) by immediately drying (dried hides), salting (salted hides), salting and then drying (salted dried hides), or treating with preservatives and then drying (medicinal dried hides). Salted hides are the most common, and for adult cowhides, the method of soaking them in a saturated salt solution for 24 hours (brine cure) is used.
