Father and son, Flemish painters of the same name. (1) The father (1582-1649) from Ambers. Influenced by Elsheimer and Rubens, he is said to have painted mythological subjects as well as landscapes and genre scenes, but there are few surviving works that can be confirmed as his work. (2) The son (1610-90) Born in Ambers. Studied under his father and Brouwer. Registered with the Ambers Painters' Guild in 1632. In 1651, he settled in Brussels as court painter and art gallery director for Archduke Leopold Wilhelm. Many of his works were genre scenes, depicting everyday life in markets, streets, rooms, taverns, and other places with humor and allegory. His representative works include "Archduke Wilhelm's Brussels Art Gallery" (Royal Museum of Fine Arts, Brussels) and "Three Peasants Playing Music" (Alte Pinakothek, Munich).
