The capital of Mizoram state in northeastern India. It is located in the Lushai Hills at an altitude of about 900m near the Myanmar border. The population is mainly Lushai, but there are also many refugees from Myanmar. In the 1970s, it became the center of activity for the Mizo National Front, which demanded independence. It produces household metal products, handwoven carpets, and furniture. In the surrounding river valleys, it cultivates rice, corn, beans, tobacco, and cotton. It is connected to the northern state of Assam by a road. Population: 154,300 (1991 estimate).
