Japanese: ツルニンジン(蔓人参) - ツルニンジン（英語表記）Codonopsis lanceolata

A perennial plant of the Campanulaceae family, it is widely distributed in the temperate zone of eastern Asia and grows wild in the mountains and fields of Japan. The stems become vines that wrap around other plants and exude a white juice when cut. The branches are short and usually have 3 to 4 leaves attached to the ends. The leaves are oval, 4 to 10 cm long, thin, and powdery on the underside. From August to October, it produces thick, short, bell-shaped flowers 2 to 3 cm in diameter at the ends of the branches. The outside is whitish-green and the inside has purple-brown spots. After flowering, it produces capsules. Its name comes from the fact that its roots are as thick as ginseng. It is also known as Jiisobu because its flowers are larger than those of the closely related species of the same genus, Baasobu.

キキョウ科の多年草で，アジア東部の温帯に広く分布し，日本各地の山野に自生する。茎はつるになって他物に巻きつき，切ると白い汁を出す。分枝した枝は短く，普通その先端付近に3～4枚の葉を接してつける。この葉は長さ4～10cmの楕円形で質が薄く，下面は白粉を帯びる。8～10月頃，枝先に径2～3cmの太く短い鐘形の花をつける。外面は白緑色で内面には紫褐色の斑点がある。花後，蒴果を結ぶ。名は根がチョウセンニンジンのように太いことによる。また同属の近縁種バアソブに比べて花が大きいことからジイソブの名もある。
