Japanese: モンステラ(英語表記)Monstera; windowleaf
Monstera (English spelling) Monstera; windowleaf
A general term for the genus Monstera in the Araceae family. It is derived from the Latin word meaning "monster". It is a creeping evergreen perennial plant with about 30 species distributed in tropical America. Several species are sold as ornamental plants. The leaves have long petioles and grow alternately. In its natural habitat, it grows by extending thick aerial roots and twining around trees and rocks. The spadix with a yellowish-white spathe resembles that of Asian skunk cabbage, but it rarely blooms in small pots. Monstera adansonii and Monstera pertusa are the most commonly cultivated. Monstera adansonii have dark green leathery leaves with pinnate notches between the lateral veins. The leaves can reach a maximum length of about 1m. Monstera adansonii have leaves that are like smaller versions of Monstera adansonii, and can reach a length of 30-40cm. They should be kept in full sun from autumn to spring and in partial shade in summer. The optimum temperature for growth is 15°C or above, but if watered sparingly, it will survive winter without freezing.

Japanese:
サトイモ科モンステラ属の総称。ラテン語で「怪物」を意味する言葉に由来する。熱帯アメリカに約 30種が分布するつる性の常緑多年草。観葉植物として数種が流通する。葉は長い葉柄をもち,互生。自生地では,太い気根を伸ばしながら,樹木や岩にからみつくように生育する。黄白色の仏炎包がつく肉穂花序はミズバショウに似るが,小さな鉢仕立てではめったに咲くことはない。ホウライショウとヒメモンステラ M.adansonii(M.pertusa)が最もよく栽培される。ホウライショウは暗緑色の革質の葉をもち,側脈の間に羽状の切れ込みが入る。葉は最大で長さ約 1mに達する。ヒメモンステラはホウライショウを小型にしたような葉で,長さ 30~40cmになる。秋から春にかけては日に当て,夏は半日陰で管理する。生育適温は 15℃以上であるが,水やりを控え目にすれば,凍結しない程度で越冬する。
