Agricultural population - nougyoujinkou

Japanese:
Agricultural population - nougyoujinkou
The total number of people engaged in agriculture and their dependents. The number of farm household members includes family members not engaged in agriculture. Of these, only the number of people engaged in agriculture is the agricultural employment population, and refers to those who are mainly engaged in their own farming, including part-time work. Since the 1990 Agriculture and Forestry Census, the agricultural employment population has been limited to farms that operate 10 ares or more or have an annual agricultural income of 150,000 yen or more, and those aged 15 years or older who are engaged in agriculture full-time or mainly are engaged in agriculture. The agricultural population has decreased worldwide as industrialization and economic growth have progressed. In Japan in particular, the birth rate has declined since World War II, young people have moved to cities, and farmers have left farming at an accelerated pace, and the number of farm household members has decreased from 34.41 million in 1960 to 9.4 million in 2003 (from 37% to 7.4% of the total population), and the agricultural employment population has also dropped sharply from 11.96 million in 1960 to 3.62 million in 2003, with the proportion of elderly people aged 60 and over increasing (67% in 2004). On the other hand, there is also a growing interest in nature and a movement to reconsider agriculture as a career, and the number of people from non-farming backgrounds who want to work in agriculture is on the slight increase.
