Romania (language) (English spelling) Romania

...The above languages (1), (2), and (3) are sometimes collectively called Ibero-Romance, (4), (5), and (6) Gallo-Romance, (7), (8), and (9) Italo-Romance, and (10) and (11) Balkan-Romance, but the position of (3) and (7) is subject to debate. The area where Latin and its successor Romance languages were widespread is sometimes called "Romania," but this does not completely correspond to the administrative territory of the Roman Empire. Latin never took root in the Greek-speaking cultural sphere from the southern Balkan Peninsula to Asia Minor and Egypt, and the language of the Basque people living in the northwest of the Iberian Peninsula was not replaced by Latin.
