The Kano school that was active in Edo after Kano Tan'yū. It is called Edo Kano as opposed to Kyo Kano. The Kano school that began with Masanobu was active mainly in Kyoto, but after the establishment of the Edo Shogunate, Naganobu, Mitsunobu, and Takanobu served the Tokugawa clan. Tan'yū then became an official painter for the Shogunate in 1617, and in the same year was given a house in Edo Kajibashimongai and founded the Kajibashi Kano school. Next, Naonobu and Yasunobu also served the Shogunate during the Kan'ei era (1624-1644), and were each given a house, and founded the Kobiki-cho Kano and Nakahashi Kano schools. The four schools, including Hamamachi Kano, were called oku-eshi and maintained their position as the top Shogunate painters, with branch families, disciples who were omote-eshi and town-eshi below them. Edo Kano was incorporated into the Shogunate-han system and was the center of the art world for a long time, but its style gradually became a mere formality.
