A salt of molybdic acid with the general formula x M I 2 O y MoO 3 z H 2 O. The simplest composition is orthomolybdate M I 2 MoO 4. Molybdic acid has a strong tendency to condense; for example, an aqueous solution of potassium salt K 2 MoO 4 is alkaline, but when acid is added to it, condensation proceeds depending on the hydrogen ion concentration, producing isopolymolybdate ions such as Mo 2 O 7 2− , Mo 7 O 24 6− , HMoO 24 5− , Mo 8 O 26 4− , and H 2 Mo 8 O 26 2−.
