A bird of the Opisthocomidae family of the order Lesser Cuckoos. There is one species in one family. The Opisthocomi is known as a strange bird in many ways. It is about 60 cm long, with a small head with a long crest and a thin neck. It has large wings and a wide, long tail. The plumage of the male and female is the same, with a brown body with white stripes on the upper side and reddish yellow on the underside. It is found in northern South America, living in flocks of about 5 to 10 pairs in mangrove forests along the Amazon and Orinoco river basins. This bird's bursa, which is supposed to store food, is particularly enlarged and large, with thick walls, and food is ground up in the bursa.

ホトトギス目ツメバケイ科Opisthocomidaeの鳥。1科1種。ツメバケイは多くの点で奇妙な鳥として知られている。全長は約60cm，長い冠羽のある頭は小さく，くびが細い。翼は大きく，尾は幅が広く長い。雌雄の羽色は同じで，体の上面は褐色の地に白い縞模様があり，下面は赤黄色である。分布は南アメリカ北部で，アマゾン川，オリノコ川の流域沿いのマングローブ林などに5～10つがいくらいの群れで生息する。この鳥は，本来食物を蓄えるべき嗉囊（そのう）がとくに肥大して大きく，その壁が厚くなっており，食物は嗉囊ですりつぶされる。
