[Died] June 7, 1937. Los Angeles, California. American actress. Real name: Harlean Carpenter. She was the original "sexy blonde actress." After her parents divorced, she moved to Los Angeles with her mother. At the age of 16, she dropped out of high school and eloped with her husband, but in 1928, she overcame her husband's objections and pursued acting, leading to a divorce. She caught the eye of former film producer and businessman Howard Hughes, who chose her to play the heroine, replacing Swedish actress Greta Nissen, in Hewlett-Packard's Hell's Angels (1930), which he directed, when the film was remade from silent to talkie. After playing only minor roles in a few films, she moved to Metro-Goldwyn-Mayer MGM for $60,000. Her popularity grew among film fans, critics, and industry insiders with each film she appeared in, including Red Dust (1932) and Dinner at Eight (1933), both of which were box office successes. When filmmaking ethics were tightened in 1934, she replaced her previous sexy image with an intelligent and sensitive one. Despite her success as an actress, her private life was not blessed. Her second husband, an MGM executive, died in an accident believed to be suicide in 1932, and her third husband, a cinematographer, was divorced within a year. She was close to marrying actor William Powell when he died of uremia in 1937 at the age of 26.
