Japanese: 坪井玄道 - つぼいかねみち
Tsuboi Gendou - Tsuboi Kanemichi

A proponent of standard gymnastics. Born in Nakayama Village, Shimousa Province (Nakayama, Ichikawa City, Chiba Prefecture). He moved to Tokyo at the age of 15 to study English, and entered university in 1871 (Meiji 4). After graduating from Miyagi English School, he became a teacher at the newly opened Gymnastics Training School in 1879, and as an interpreter for the head professor, George Adams Leland (1850-1924, American), he devoted himself to introducing the theory and practice of Leland. His book, Shinsen Taisosho (New Selection of Exercises) (1882), is a translation of Leland's lectures. In 1885, he co-authored with Tanaka Morinori (date of birth and death unknown) and published Outdoor Play Methods (also known as Outdoor Exercise Methods), which can be said to be the first sports commentary written by a Japanese person. He later became a professor at Tokyo Higher Normal School (now the University of Tsukuba), and when he returned to Japan from a tour of Europe and the United States in 1902 (Meiji 35), he brought back some table tennis equipment that he had learned about overseas as a souvenir and introduced it to Japan.
