Order of the Knights of John

Japanese: ヨハネ騎士団 - ヨハネきしだん

A medieval knightly order. Its full name is the Ordo Equitum Sancti Johannis (Order of Saint John the Helper of Jerusalem). It was founded in the late 11th century by the monk Gerard from southern France, and was approved by the Pope in 1113. Along with the Knights Templar, they played a major role in the Crusades, while also establishing hospitals in various places. After the fall of Jerusalem (1291), they moved their base to Cyprus and then to Rhodes, but were overwhelmed by Islamic forces, and from 1530 they based their base on the island of Malta and called themselves the Knights of Malta.

中世の騎士修道会の一つ。正称は〈エルサレム・聖ヨハネ救護騎士修道会〉，ラテン語でOrdo Equitum Sancti Johannis。南仏出身の修道士ジェラールが11世紀末に創設，1113年教皇認可。テンプル騎士団とともに十字軍の主力となる一方，各地に病院を設立した。エルサレム陥落（1291年）後，本拠をキプロス島，さらにロードス島に移したが，イスラム勢に押され，1530年以降はマルタ島に拠ってマルタ騎士団と称した。
