Sand starfish - Sand star

Japanese: スナヒトデ - すなひとで
Sand starfish - Sand star

It is a marine animal belonging to the phylum Echinodermata, class Asteroidea, family Acanthidae. It is a brown starfish that lives in sandy and muddy areas, with long, slender, soft arms that tend to break off at the base or in the middle of the arms when touched. Its arms can reach lengths of over 10 centimeters. Its base color is brown, but the parts along the midline of the arms are black, and the ventral surface is pale yellow. It does not have suckers at the tips of its tube feet, so it cannot climb up rocks. It feeds on young shellfish, polychaetes, and other small animals in the sand and mud. It is found in the shallow waters from southwestern Hokkaido to Kyushu. The closely related starfish L. maculata is a large eight-armed species with arm lengths reaching 30 centimeters.
