A village in Mima County, central Tokushima Prefecture. Population 1,744 (1995). Located in the upper reaches of the Sadamitsu River, a tributary of the Yoshino River, on the northern slope of Mt. Tsurugi. A typical mountain village surrounded by the steep Tsurugi mountains on all sides. Depopulation has been severe, with about 50% of the population leaving in the 15 years from 1965 to 1980. In 1975, it was designated a nature resort village, and is aiming to develop tourism and agriculture. The main crops are persimmons, chestnuts, shiitake mushrooms, and tea, with persimmons being particularly famous. Tourism development on Mt. Tsurugi has progressed rapidly in recent years, and the town is bustling with tourists, with the Tsurugi Mountain Lodge, the Prefectural Citizens' Forest, and the Prefectural Tsurugi Mountain Ski Resort. 徳島県中部,美馬郡の村。人口1744(1995)。吉野川の支流貞光川上流域を占め,剣山北斜面に位置する。四周を急峻な剣山地に囲まれた典型的な山村。過疎化が激しく,1965‐80年の15年間に人口の約5割が流出した。1975年自然休養村の指定をうけ,観光農業の発展をめざしている。主要作物は柿,栗,シイタケ,茶などで,特に柿は有名。剣山の観光開発は近年急速に進み,国民宿舎剣山荘,県民の森,県営剣山スキー場などがあり,観光客でにぎわう。
