Utsugi ruins

Japanese: 宇津木遺跡 - うつきいせき

Located in Utsugi Mukaihara, Hachioji, Tokyo, this Jomon and Yayoi period ruins is located on flat land at the northeastern end of a tongue-shaped plateau on the right bank of the Tama River. In 1964, excavations conducted prior to the construction of the Hachioji Interchange on the Chuo Expressway uncovered four unique graves from the end of the Yayoi period. Shortly after, they were named square moat graves, and since then, more graves of this type have been discovered in various places. Excavations uncovered a settlement from the middle Jomon period, one pit burial from the end of the middle Yayoi period, and 53 from the late Yayoi period, and about 20m to the east, four square moat graves were lined up in a north-south direction.

東京都八王子市宇津木向原にあり，多摩川右岸の舌状台地北東端の平坦地に位置する縄文，弥生時代の遺跡。1964年の中央高速自動車道八王子インターチェンジの建設工事に先立つ発掘調査で，弥生時代終末期の特殊な4基の墓が発見された。しばらくして方形周溝墓と名づけられたが，以後この種の墓の発見が各地で相次いだ。発掘では縄文時代中期の集落と，弥生時代中期末の竪穴1，同後期のもの53基が見つかり，その東方20m余のところに，南北方向に4基の方形周溝墓が並んでいた。
