Noble scallop (English spelling)

Japanese: ヒオウギガイ(檜扇貝) - ヒオウギガイ(英語表記)noble scallop
Noble scallop (English spelling)
A bivalve mollusk of the Pectinidae family (illustration). A large species with an open fan shape, reaching 12.5 cm in length, 13 cm in height, and 3.5 cm in width. The surface of the shell has 24 ridges radiating from the apex, with a row of scale-like protrusions on top. Its shape resembles a Japanese fan, hence the name. The apex of the shell is straight with triangular protrusions on both the front and back, with the anterior one being larger. The right shell has a recess through which the byssus extends. The color and pattern of the shell vary from individual to individual and are not consistent, but most are brownish, and there are cloud-like markings near the apex of the shell.
