A general term for the protozoan class, the flagellates. This is the most primitive group of protozoa, and is a single-celled organism that always has one or several flagella during its life. They are broadly divided into phytoflagellates that have plastids (such as Euglena and Volvox) and zooflagellates that do not have plastids (such as Trypanosoma and Trichomonas). The former are often known as marine or freshwater plankton, and the latter as parasites. Phytoflagellates are also considered to be lower plants.
