Japanese: ベロ･オリゾンテ（英語表記）Belo Horizonte

The capital of Minas Gerais state in southeastern Brazil. Its name means "beautiful horizon." It is located almost in the center of the country, on a plateau at an altitude of 830 meters, with a population of 1,529,566 (1991) and metropolitan population of 2,060,804 (1993). It was planned and built in 1897 to replace the former state capital, Ouro Preto. It is one of the few man-made cities that preceded Brasilia. In recent years, the city's industry has developed rapidly, along with the nearby industrial park Contagem. As the capital of the mining state of Minas Gerais, there are many metal-related departments, such as machinery, automobiles, and metallurgy.

ブラジル南東部，ミナス･ジェライス州の州都。〈美しい地平線〉を意味する。国土のほぼ中心部，標高830mの高原にあり，人口152万9566(1991)，大都市域人口206万0804(1993)。1897年，旧州都オウロ･プレトに代わる都市として計画･建設された。ブラジリアに先だつ数少ない人工都市の一つである。近年，近郊の工業団地コンタジェンなどとともに，同市の工業は急速に発展している。機械，自動車，冶金など鉱産州ミナス･ジェライスの州都らしく，金属関係の部門が多い。
