This is a tumulus from the end of the Kofun period, located in Takatori-cho, Takaichi-gun, Nara Prefecture. In 1984, the Kashihara Prefectural Archaeological Institute investigated a stone coffin with a horizontal opening, made of cut tuff stone, which had already been considerably destroyed. Restoration revealed that the stone coffin had an inner diameter of about 3m in length, 2m in width, and 2.5m in height, and that the Chinese ruler and golden section were used. Only a few artifacts remain, including a lacquer film thought to be a fragment of a wooden coffin, gilt bronze metal fittings, and nails. The circular base fittings are similar to those excavated from Takamatsuzuka. The mound was also investigated at the same time, and it was estimated to have been an octagonal plan with a width of about 30m. Based on the shape of the mound, it is believed that the buried person was a member of the imperial family, but there has been much debate over who the buried person was. Teeth analysis indicated that it was a woman or a slender man around 30 years old. Based on the above and the correspondence between the place names "Dannooka" and "Sadanooka" which appear in the elegy for Prince Kusakabe in the "Manyoshu" and Mayumioka and Sada, where this tumulus is located, the most likely theory is that this is the tomb of Prince Kusakabe, who died in 689 at the age of 27.
