Wolff, B.

… In the following 18th century, poets and writers all concentrated on imitating and following the works of their predecessors such as Vondel, especially French classicism, and literary activity stagnated considerably. However, among these works, such as Pieter Langendijk's (1683-1756) comedy The Marriage Fraud (1714), which was modeled on Molière, Justus van Effen's (1684-1735) essay The Dutch Spectator (1731-35), which was modeled on the English writers J. Addison and Steele, and Sarah Burgelhardt (1782), a novel in the form of an epistolary novel, co-written by two female writers, Betje Wolff (1738-1804) and Aagje Deken (1741-1804), are noteworthy. During this period (1795-1813) of national suffering in the Netherlands as a result of the French Revolution and its subjugation to France, Bilderdijk, who wrote the lyric poem "Prayer" (1796) and the play "Floris V" (1808), played an important role as a pioneer of Dutch Romanticism.
