Records of tea ceremonies are called chakaiki or simply kaiki. The four major tea ceremony records include the Tennojiya Kaiki (1548-90) which covers three generations of the Tennojiya family in Sakai (Tsuda Sotatsu, Soeki, and Sobon), the Matsuya Kaiki (1534-1650) which covers three generations of the Matsuya Genzaburo family, a lacquer wholesaler in Nara (Matsuya Hisamasa, Hisayoshi, and Hisashige), the Imai Sokyu Tea Diary Excerpts which records 83 tea ceremonies by Imai Sokyu and others from 1554-1689, and the Sotan Diary (1586-1613) by Kamiya Sotan, a wealthy Hakata merchant, which provide detailed information about the contents of tea ceremonies during the heyday of tea ceremony centered around Rikyu. In the early modern period, the Kaiki by Yamashina Doan, which records the behavior of Konoe Iehiro, is outstanding, and countless other tea ceremony records have been handed down.

　茶事の記録を茶会記，また単に会記と称する。四大茶会記として，堺の天王寺屋3代(津田宗達･宗及･宗凡)にわたる《天王寺屋会記》(1548‐90)，奈良の漆問屋松屋源三郎家の3代(松屋久政･久好･久重)の断続する《松屋会記》(1534‐1650)，今井宗久による1554‐89年の自他の茶会計83会を記した《今井宗久茶湯日記書抜》および博多の富商神屋宗湛の《宗湛日記》(1586‐1613)が，利休を中心とする茶の湯全盛時の茶事の内容を詳細に伝えている。近世に入ると，近衛家熙の行状を記した山科道安の《槐記》が出色であり，その他無数の茶会記録が伝存している。…
