A red alga (illustration) with a cylindrical body, alternate or forked branches, and a height of 10-20 cm. A symbiotic sponge lives on the surface of the body, resembling the skin of a bird's foot, hence the name Triashi or Tori noashi. This deep-sea seaweed is found on the Pacific coast west of the Kanto region, the northern coast of Kyushu, and the coast of the Korean peninsula, and is used as a raw material for agar and tokoroten. When fresh, it is dark red, but when dried, the body turns white due to the symbiotic sponge. It is classified as a member of the Agaraceae family, but the amount of agar contained in the dried alga is about 5% of the alga, which is much less than the 20-30% of Agar that is contained in Tengusa.
