These are official diaries written by successive directors of the Dutch trading posts in Hirado and Nagasaki during the Edo period. They begin with the diary of the seventh director of the Hirado trading post, Nicholas Koeckebacker, dated September 6, 1633 (Kan'ei 10), and continue through the diary of the last director of the Nagasaki trading post, Donker Curtius, dated February 28, 1860 (Man'en 1). They are fundamental historical materials on Japan-Netherlands negotiations, and are also important for understanding the domestic politics and economy of the time, such as the role the Netherlands played in the policy of national isolation. They also provide a detailed description of the daily life of the Dutch, making them a great read. They were originally kept at the Dutch trading post in Nagasaki (the Japanese branch of the Dutch East India Company), but after 1852 (Kaei 5), they were sent in three shipments, passed through Batavia (now Jakarta), and are now kept in the "Documents Related to Japan" section of the National Archives in The Hague, Netherlands. Currently, all of them are stored on microfilm at the Historiographical Institute of the University of Tokyo, and some have been translated.
