A military commander in the Muromachi period, and a retainer of Hosokawa Masamoto, the shogunal deputy of the Muromachi shogunate. Sawazoken Muneyu. Kasa. A member of the Ogasawara clan of Shinano Province, he served in the Omi campaign of Shogun Ashikaga Yoshiki (Yoshitane) in 1491, when Masamoto recognized his falconry skills and made him his vassal (Sonkeikaku edition of Fumon Monogatari). As Asatsugu's falconry is mentioned in the Inryoken Diary dated February 9, 1491, he must have come to Kyoto before that. He later became deputy governor of three upper counties in Yamashiro Province (Kuze, Tsuzugi, and Sagara), and in 1496 he attacked Yarokuzaemon Yusa in Yamashiro Province, and in February 1497 he was appointed as the deputy governor of 17 places in Kawachi Province. He played an active role as a subordinate of Masamoto, attacking Mount Hiei in July of the same year and attacking Hatakeyama Naoyuki in Yamashiro Province in September of the same year. From December of the same year until June 1501, he marched into Yamato Province, and Kofuku-ji Temple moved the sacred tree and demanded the Imperial Court that Chokei resign. In April of the same year, he ordered his vassals Momii and Yori to attack Yohonjo, but after being defeated, he marched into Yamato Province again in May and burned down Saidai-ji Temple. In March 1504, he rebelled against Masamoto, but was pardoned in June thanks to the intercession of Yakushiji Genichi, and went to Kyoto. When Genichi's rebellion broke out in September of the same year, Asatsune also sided with it. In June of the second year, he was pardoned again and went to Kyoto, where he was reappointed by Masamoto as Shugodai of the three upper districts of Yamashiro, as he had been previously. In August of the third year, he advanced into Yamato Province to subjugate the local lords of the Hatakeyama side, the Tsutsui and Ochi clans, and major battles were fought at Hokkeji Temple, Bodaisan Shorekiji Temple, and Mt. Tonomine. When Masamoto was assassinated in June of the fourth year, he was surrounded by an uprising led by Isshiki Yoshiarikata of Tango Province and committed suicide. A book on falconry, "Soeki Sodensho," remains. (Kyoji Morita) Source: Asahi Japanese Historical Biography: Asahi Shimbun Publications Inc. About Asahi Japanese Historical Biography |
