...A tall tree of the walnut family native to North America, also planted in Japan (illustration). The wood was used for ski boards and other products. The young branches and leaf axes have glandular hairs and are fragrant. The leaves are pinnately compound with 5 to 7 leaflets. The male inflorescences are branched catkins that appear at the base of new branches. The female flowers form short inflorescences at the tips of new branches. The outer surface of the female flower is light green and hairy, and at the top there is a dark red pistil surrounded by four projections made of triangular bracts and tepals. The fruit is almost spherical with four vertical constrictions that split along these lines when ripe, releasing the pit. ...
