Samuel Courtauld
1876‐1947
British businessman and patron of the arts. Born into a family that had been involved in the silk weaving business in Essex for generations, during his generation the business expanded overseas with the addition of synthetic silk thread. Influenced by his wife, who had a deep knowledge of music and art, he became a patron of the arts. In 1923 he donated funds to the Tate Gallery to purchase French Impressionist and Post-Impressionist paintings, including Van Gogh's Sunflowers. Some of these paintings, along with his personal collection, are now on display as the Courtauld Institute Galleries.
