The founder of Baekje, Korea. A legendary figure. According to the legend of the founding of Baekje, as told in the "Samguk Sagi," King Onjo was the third son of Jumong, the founder of Goguryeo. However, fearing the actions of his eldest and half-brother, he fled Buyeo with his brother Bolyu and moved south to Hansan. Bolyu settled in Michuhol, while Onjo made Wiryeseong the capital and named the country Shikje. This was in 18 BC. After Bolyu died, Onjo brought his people together, named the country Baekje, and took the name Buyeo. This is a founding legend that reflects the formation of the Baekje state as a result of the Buyeo tribe moving south. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
