A small crustacean of the Ostracoda subclass, order Podocopa, family Ostracodidae (illustration). It is found in muddy shallow rice fields and ponds, but is especially common from spring to summer. It has a small, round, bivalve-like shell about 0.8 mm long and grayish-green in color. The closely related Herpetocypris intermedia has an oblong, oval shell that is translucent and pale yellowish green or green. It is about 1.2 mm long and 0.5 mm high. It is often found in small water bowls and aquariums with aquatic plants, but is commonly seen in shallow rice fields and pond ditches, especially from summer to autumn.

貝虫亜綱ポドコーパ目カイミジンコ科の小型甲殻類（イラスト）。泥の多い浅い水田や池沼などにいるが，とくに春から夏にかけて多く見られる。体長0.8mmくらいの小さい丸形の二枚貝状の殻をもち，灰色を帯びた黄緑色。近縁種のナガカイミジンコHerpetocypris intermediaでは，殻は横長で楕円形をしており，半透明，淡い黄みがかった緑色または緑色をしている。長さ1.2mm，高さ0.5mmくらい。水草を入れた小さい水鉢や水槽にもよく現れるが，浅い水田，池溝にふつうに見られ，とくに夏から秋にかけて多く出現する。
