This national park is located in eastern Kenya, halfway between Nairobi and Mombasa. It was established in 1948. A railway and road run through the park, dividing it into east and west, but the combined area of the two is 20,782 square kilometers, larger than Shikoku in Japan and the largest in Kenya. The vegetation is mainly acacia savanna and semi-desert, but there is also mountain forest and sparse woodland. There are 95 species of mammals, including large animals such as black rhinos, buffalo, and elands, and the main attraction is the large herds of elephants. There is also a rich variety of birds, numbering 517 species. Accommodation facilities such as Kilaguni Lodge are also available.
